Robot is a movie that was released in 2010. Directed by Shankar, it stars superstar Rajnikanth, AIshwarya Rai Bachchan and Danny Denzongpa. It is a sci-fi movie which ventures into speculation about how things could turn out if robots could emote like human beings. It was a massive hit, grossing over 1.5 billion rupees (Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions) and about 12 million dollars overseas.

Dr Vaseegaran, played by Rajnikanth, is a world-class robotics scientists who invents the perfect humanoid robot, which can speak, walk and behave just like a regular human being. Vasi names it Chitti (also played by Rajnikanth)i. Chitti is a big hit at the International Robotics Conference in Chennai and even Vasi's mentor Dr Bohra (played by Danny Denzongpa) is impressed.

Chitti proves to be very helpful. He even helps Vasi's fiance, Sana (played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) cheat in her medical college exams and do well in them. On a suburban electric train, Sana is cornered and molested by a group of thugs and Chitti once again saves the day, sending the villains flying.

All is going well, until Chitti is taken to the Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Institute and the council members reject Chitti's relevance on the grounds that a robot is not human. It has no discretion of its own or any emotions and so it could cause as much damage as it could do good. Vasi then decides to teach Chitti how to emote.

The whole things goes horribly wrong as soon as that project begins. As Chitti understands and learns the different human emotions, he begins to feel anger, sadness and joy. The trouble begins when he begins to feel love for Vasi's fiance, Sana. At a war summit, when a new and improved (and very emotional) Chitti is asked to demonstrate his tactical prowess, Chitti breaks out in poetry instead. An infuriated Vasi smashes Chitti to pieces.

Dr Bohra, Vasi's mentor, is trying to make an android of his own and desperately wants to get his hands on Chitti's neural schema. He finds Chitti almost destroyed, understands his neural schema completely and introduces his own evil addition to Chitti, so as to sell Chitti to a group of terrorists.

Robot was rated U/A, has a total run time of 179 minutes and is available in DVD format, which was released in 2011 by Reliance Home Entertainment.
