Mirza Ghalib, an Indian Television Drama Series, by Gulzar is an adaption of the famous Urdu and Persian poet, Mirza Ghalib's life. The series beautifully portrays the poetic life of Ghalib, played by Naseeruddin Shah accompanied by Neena Gupta as Nawab Jan (a courtesan lover) and Tanvi Azmi as Umrao Begum. The series features the captivating ghazals sung and composed by Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh that capture the essence of rich Mughal Culture. The show was aired on Doordarshan National in 1988 and became critically acclaimed.

The script is well researched and written elaborately by Gulzar. It thoroughly presents the rags-to-riches story of Ghalib, a migrant from Agra to Delhi who is married to Umrao Begum at the tender age of 13 yrs. He finds it difficult to impress the local poets with his poems. Subsequently, he becomes one of the most renowned and wealthy poets. The series depicts his tragic love affair with a courtesan, followed by adversity and facing imprisonment on the charge of gambling. The actors are able to bring forth both the genius of Ghalib the poet, as well as his shortcomings as a man.

Mirza Ghalib was released by Saregama Studios in DVD format. It is available in Hindi with a run time of 120 minutes.
