An Indian drama-comedy movie, English Vinglish was written and directed by Gauri Shinde and released in 2012. The principal character of the film , Shashi, is played by Indian actress Sridevi and was inspired by Gauri Shinde's mother. Although the movie was originally made in the Hindi language, it was adapted into a re-shot Tamil version which has been dubbed into Telugu versions as well. Other stars in the film include Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou and Priya Anand. Short appearances by Ajith Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan have also been incorporated into the movie.

The primary storyline of English Vinglish revolves around Shashi, who is a sweet-tempered housewife who sets out to speak and understand English to overcome the the insecurity that she feels from her well educated husband and daughter. As the mockery by her family and society on the whole get worse and worse, she enrolls herself in a course that teaches spoken English in an attempt to gain her self-respect back. Gauri Shinde's film brings out the sad truth about how the ability to speak good English apart from money and fame tend to influence the treatment meted out to an individual by the society in India. Shashi's transformational journey as portrayed in the film is not just touching but also incredibly light-hearted, as her passion to overcome her insecurity shines through everything she does.

Shashi's aim in the story is to master the language as well as teach her ill-treaters and the world a lesson. Shot predominantly in New York, USA, Gauri Shinde's movie is all about the struggle to become a self-assured and confident woman. The struggle shown in this movie is very relatable apart from being sensitive, because a lot of people around the world face problems of this kind with the English language. English Vinglish by Gauri Shinde was released in 2012 by Eros Entertainment and has a run time of 134 minutes. The film has been rated U (Universal) and is available in the DVD format in the Hindi language with English subtitles.
