Kahaani (2012) is directed by Sujoy Ghosh, and stars Vidya Balan. The performance of the lead actors, the screenplay, and the cinematography was praised by critics. The movie was not an instant hit, but became successful when good reviews got around. Made with a small budget of 80 million Indian rupees, it earned more than 1 billion rupees in the first 50 days of its theatrical run. It won five Filmfare Awards and three National Awards. The movie had some similarity with Satyajit Ray’s films, Aranyer Din Ratri and Charulata.

In the opening scene, there is a poison gas attack in a compartment of the Kolkata Metro. All the passengers on board are killed. After two years, a pregnant software engineer from London, Vidya Bagchi, arrives in Kolkata in search of her husband, Arnab Bagchi, who has gone missing. Vidya claims that her husband was working for the National Data Center. But police officer Satyoki Sinha (Parambrata Chatterjee) finds that no such person worked at NDC. Anges D’Mello, the HR head at NDC, tells Vidya that there is a former employee, Milan Darji (Indraneil Sengupta), who looks similar to the photo of her husband. Before Agnes can help any further she is shot down by Bob Biswas, an assassin. Sinha and Vidya sneak into the NDC office in the middle of the night and search for Damji’s file. Bob, the assassin, is searching for the same information. Meanwhile, all these events come to the notice of two Intelligence Bureau officials in Delhi, the chief, Bhaskaran K, and his deputy, A Khan.

Sinha and Vidya go to a dilapidated house, which was mentioned in Damji’s record. A boy who works at a tea stall identifies Sridhar. But the revelation only unveils a darker conspiracy.

Kahaani was released in 2012 by Shemaroo in DVD format. The total runtime of the movie is 123 minutes and it is rated U (universal). The movie is in Hindi and has English subtitles.
