This movie is a remake of the 1993 Malayalam supernatural-psychological thriller, Manichithrathazhu. This acclaimed movie was remade in several other Indian languages, including Kannada, Tamil, and Bengali, the Tamil version also being dubbed and released in Telugu. Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) is the Hindi remake.
Siddarth and Avni are a young couple who come back from America to settle down in their native place. They decide to take up residence in their abandoned family mansion, which is reputed to be haunted. Despite warnings from family and friends, the couple go ahead with their plans.
Avni opens a locked room in the mansion and, from then on, strange and unexplainable events begin to happen. Siddharth‘s family wants to bring in a priest, Shri Jayaprakash Bharti, to exorcise the palace. Siddharth, who does not believe in ghosts, suspects a young woman named Radha as being the one behind all the strange events.
Siddarth brings in his psychiatrist friend, Dr Aditya Shrivastav to examine Radha and find out if she might have a psychological problem. Dr. Shrivastav soon realises that it is not Radha, but Avni herself who is behind it all.
Avni has been possessed by the spirit of classical dancer, Manjulika, who was killed by the local king when she refused to comply with his wishes. She is still seeking to kill the king who murdered her. Aditya then explains to Siddarth that childhood experiences have given Avni a dissociative personality disorder and have left her vulnerable to being taken over by another personality.
The priest, Shri Jayaprakash Bharti, also arrives. Aditya confronts Manjulika in the form of Avni and extracts a promise from her that she will leave Avni once she kills the king. She plans to do this on Durgashtami.
An elaborate plan is devised to make Manjulika think that she has killed the king, while the priest performs the ceremony to rid the mansion of her spirit forever. Siddharth agrees to the plan as he is desperate to save his wife, who is unaware that she is being used by Manjulika.
