Joker by Shirish Kunder is a Bollywood science-fiction comedy film. Shirish Kunder’s movie stars Akshay Kumar as Agastya, Sonakshi Sinha as Diva, and Shreyas Talpade as Babban.

In Joker, Agastya is an NRI scientist who is trying to develop a system which will make it possible for humans to communicate with aliens. However, after many failed attempts, his seniors are losing faith in him. They tell Agastya that he only has one month left to come up with some substantial results or else his project will be scrapped. Meanwhile, Agastya’s girlfriend Diva tells him that his father, who lives in an Indian village called Paglapur, is extremely unwell. The protagonist rushes back to his native, where he meets a whole bunch of unusual characters. Agastya meets a man who thinks that he is a lamp post. Another villager only speaks in gibberish. The entire village is completely cut off from the world, and everyone who lives there believes that the World War II is still going on. Soon it becomes clear to Agastya that his father is not really ill, and so he becomes angry and decides to return to America. However, Agastya then learns that the government completely ignores the village of Paglapur because it is absent from the demarcated map of India. He feels sorry for the inhabitants, and thinks of coming up with a solution for this unique problem. Shirish Kunder’s film then shows how the protagonist, with the help of the villagers, comes up with a plan of a fake alien invasion. Agastya says that to really get Paglapur in the limelight, rumours about the arrival of aliens must be spread. Together with the villagers, the NRI scientist creates crop circles in Paglapur. Like expected, this generates huge media hype and Paglapur finally gets attention from the rest of the world. However, what happens when Agastya’s plan of the fictitious alien invasion gets revealed is the drama that marks the rest of the story.

Shirish Kunder’s movie is filled with humour and wit. The songs are by G V Prakash Kumar. There is an item number by Chitrangada Singh. Joker (2012) DVD, released by Reliance Home Entertainment, comes with English subtitles. The movie has a U/A (Parental Guidance) rating, and a run time of 105 minutes.
