Aparna Sen a leading actress of the Bengali film industry in her time debuted as a director with the film 36 Chowringhee Lane. The film, which released in 1981, won several national and international awards including the National Film Awards in 1982 for 'Best Feature Film in English', 'Best Director' and 'Best Cinematography' and the 1983 BAFTA award for 'Best Actress.' The film has Jennifer Kendall (Violet Stoneham) in the lead role with Geoffrey Kendall, Debashree Roy, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Soni Razdan, Karan Kapoor and Sanjana Kapoor in supporting roles. The main backdrop of the movie is a flat with a single room whose address is the same as the film's title. Eventually, the bond between them deepens and the couple make good use of the privacy they find in Violet's home. On the other hand, Violet has individuals to chat with after she returns from work.
