The original Devdas is considered to be a gem of the Hindi film industry. Directed by Bimal Roy in 1955, it stars Dilip Kumar in the title role. Suchitra Sen plays Parvati while Vyjayanthimala plays the role of Chandramukhi. The film was highly appreciated by both audiences as well as critics. It bagged several National Film Awards, including the Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress Awards. It also collected Filmfare Awards in the same categories.
This Bimal Roy film depicts the story of a powerful relationship that gets entangled in the ropes of the caste system, which existed in the early 1900s. The movie still holds relevance in today’s times of hate and discrimination. In fact, the movie was remade and went on to become a mega blockbuster. The movie is set in the backdrop of rural Bengal, when feudalistic concepts were at a peak and there was a well-maintained wall of discrimination between different classes.
Devdas comes from an affluent Bengali Brahmin family. His father is strict about Dev’s upbringing, and carefully monitors his friendship with Paro, who is from a middle-class family. Paro and Devdas grow up together as close friends, and their friendship gradually blossoms into love. However, Dev’s father rejects the marriage proposal put forth by Paro’s mother. Though Paro seeks to elope, Devdas finds himself torn between his parents and his love. He cannot find the courage to go against his parents’ wishes. The film then descends into Dev’s gloomy and hopeless world, where he becomes an alcoholic and seems bent on destroying himself. During his wandering, he meets Chandramukhi, who is a courtesan, and finds comfort in her company. Chandramukhi falls in love with Dev, but understands it is a relationship without a future. This movie is a powerful portrayal of the consequences of the caste system that haunted India in older times.
Devdas has a U rating, and was released as a DVD by Shemaroo in 2010.
